South Shore Towns for Young Families
Picking a town to start your family in can be stressful. You have to consider cost, commute to work, school systems, and how you might fit in to the overall community. Luckily, you can really never go wrong when moving to the South Shore, and there are plenty of towns to choose from.
Located about 40 minutes away from Boston, the coastal town of Marshfield is perfect for families who like to get outside and explore. Summer months will be a blast with 8 different beaches to choose from and many seafood options to eat at after a full day in the sun. For those who prefer hiking to lounging by the water, Marshfield has numerous conservation land trails to visit. There’s plenty to do in the winter months, too. Visit any of the well-loved restaurants, coffee shops, and Stellwagen brewery to hang out with friends or grab a delicious bite to eat. For kids, there are playgrounds, the public library, and plenty of after-school programs to sign up for.
Be sure to take a walk at the Daniel Webster Wildlife Sanctuary and then grab a lobster roll at the famous Green Harbor Lobster Pound to get the full Marshfield experience.

Get the best of the coast and an easy commute into Boston by living in Hingham. Located in Boston Harbor, ferry travel into the city is simple and fast, giving you suburb living with quick access to your favorite city activities. There is also plenty to do at the Hingham Shipyard, from visiting Whalburgers to doing some shopping along the waterfront village. For kids, there are beaches and parks to play in and a candlepin bowling alley to spend weekend nights at. Like most South Shore towns, Hingham schools have plenty of after-school activities and sports for students to choose from.
Hang out at World’s End Park for a picnic and then head over to the Loring Hall Theatre to catch a movie at night.

For more affordable options that don’t leave out the benefits of South Shore living, check out Rockland. About 30 minutes away from Boston, Rockland makes a breeze of commuting. Though not located directly on the ocean, it’s not too far away from the shore and in about 20 minutes you can be walking down the beach of any neighboring town. Spend your weekend exploring art galleries downtown and eating at any of the great restaurants. For kids, there’s a public library, plenty of parks, and lot of school activities to check out.
Visit any part of the 2.6 mile recreation trail kept up the Iron Horse Preservation Society and then head over to Anita Marie’s for a hot cup of coffee.
